TRANSPORTATION SERVICE FOR HOMELESS STUDENTS

Transportation service is provided to students who are experiencing homelessness under the McKinney-Vento Act. Homeless students have the right to attend their "school of origin," which is defined as the school they went to before becoming homeless or whatever school they were enrolled in last, even if they move out of the district, if that is feasible.

Magnet Schools

Magnet schools should process address changes for students experiencing homelessness, who are residing at a temporary address in Saint Paul, through the Transportation Department Route Coordinator. Address changes for students experiencing homelessness, who are residing at a temporary address outside of Saint Paul, should be processed through the Title I Homeless Program Staff.

Neighborhood Schools

Neighborhood schools should process address changes for students experiencing homelessness who are residing at a temporary location outside of the school attendance area through Title I Homeless Program Staff.

It is at the district's discretion whether it will provide or arrange transportation to the school of origin once a student finds permanent housing. Permanent housing is considered a fixed, regular or adequate nighttime housing.
