Kindergarten Transition

What have you done this year? Have you connected with Head Start, Early Childhood Family Education, Early Childhood Special Education, local neighborhood child care programs? Have you had any special events to help families with transition?

Extended Learning Time (Effective, Timely Additional Assistance)

Describe how you extend learning time for children who are at risk of not meeting the state standards or reference where you have embedded this in your initiatives.

(In this section discuss the after-school programs (evenings, weekends, etc) that are available for your students or additional activities during the school day that specifically address the needs of students who are not making adequate yearly progress). These are suggestions of questions you might answer here: How did you identify children in need of assistance? How are these activities aligned to your initiatives? How do you use assessment data, both formative and summative to guide instruction in this program?

Attract and Retain Highly Qualified Staff

Describe the strategies your school uses to attract and retain highly qualified staff.

In this section, we have provided you with some information regarding how the district ensures that we attract and retain highly qualified staff. However, in your school you may also have specific activities, initiatives, etc. aimed at this purpose.

District: The district has taken a number of steps to attract and retain highly qualified staff. Recruitment activities include advertisements in local newspapers, posting jobs on our district job openings web site and other local and national recruiting web sites, recruitment at local colleges, local and national job fairs, student teachers, referrals from schools and special licensure programs such as Collaborative Urban Educator and Transition to Teaching. Efforts to retain highly qualified staff include mentoring, performance evaluation and feedback, and training opportunities.

School: In this section, discuss the activities and procedures that exist in your school for supporting new teachers. Do you have a mentoring program? Do you pair new teachers with veteran teachers? What types of professional development do you provide or support? How do you recruit teachers you who are highly qualified? For example, you may recruit teachers you know are highly qualified in literacy or mathematics.

Include Teachers in the Use of Assessments

Describe how your school includes teachers in the use of assessments in reading, mathematics and language arts.
